Aberdeen to miss out on director of football target as struggling Bundesliga giants step in

Borussia Monchengladbach want to name Lutz Pfannenstiel as their new sporting director

Borussia Monchengladbach have opened talks with Lutz Pfannenstiel to appoint him as their new sporting director.

Pfannenstiel had previously held talks with Aberdeen and declared his interest in their vacant director of football position.

The German has now been offered the chance to return to the Bundesliga. The 52-year-old, who has just recently left St Louis City, is currently in talks with Monchengladbach chiefs.

The Bundesliga’s bottom side are in the market after Roland Virus resigned as their sporting director earlier this week, after their poor start to the season.

German sources admit that it is likely that Pfannenstiel will take the job. He has previously worked at Hoffenheim and Fortuna Dusseldorf.

Pfannenstiel has close links to Aberdeen via the German company BPTC, that performed a strategic review of the Pittodrie footballing operation back in 2024.

He has held talks with Aberdeen but financially that move had always looked a bit of a stretch.

The Dons are still going through that process with an external recruitment company currently sounding out various candidates before they put their final shortlist to Aberdeen later this month.

Aberdeen also have their own applicants and options they are also looking at, with chief executive Alan Burrows and interim director of football Dave Lawrie leading that search.

The Scottish Cup winners want the new person to come in and to work in tandem with head coach Jimmy Thelin.

Aberdeen have been in the market since Steven Gunn stepped down last month.

The Reds are in Conference League duty tonight as they open up against Shakhtar Donetsk at home.
