Aldi confirms official opening date for new store based in Scots town

The opening marks part of Aldi's £1.6 billion investment into opening new stores across the next two years.

Aldi has been ramping up its ambitious expansion plans this year. As part of its move, the supermarket has been opening stores in 'priority' locations across the UK.

There's good news for those in the East Dunbartonshire area, as a new store has been set for Kirkintilloch, with doors officially being opened to the public this month from 8am on Thursday, November 20.

While Aldi is in the middle of expanding its portfolio with more openings, the supermarket does currently operate over a staggering 1,050 stores across the UK, with 109 based in Scotland alone.

Led by store manager John Armstrong, the new Kirkintilloch branch will also boast a team of 25 colleagues from the local communities, with the supermarket also hiring store positions from the local area.

Based on Mcgavigans Road, Lenzie, it will offer shoppers fresh Scottish meat, alongside weekly offers, the firm's award-winning 'Specially Selected' range, exclusive beers, wines and spirits and a 'Food to Go' section at the front of the store.

There will also be Aldi's iconic middle aisle, dubbed 'Specialbuys', that will offer a selection of highly coveted, eclectic products every Thursday and Sunday, with everything from beauty buys to gardening items on offer.

Meanwhile, Aldi has also called on local charities and food banks registered in the Kirkintilloch area to register with neighbourly, a community engagement platform that the supermarket has partnered with since 2019.

This will provide local charities with bags of surplus food and perishable products, such as fruit, vegetables and baked goods, seven days a week when they send an email to aldi@neighbourly.com.

To celebrate the opening, Aldi has teamed up with Team GB's Kate Archibald who will be cutting the important store ribbon on its opening day, alongside handing out complimentary bags of Aldi's 'Super Six' fresh fruit and vegetables to the first 30 customers.

The partnership between the German grocer and the gold medal winning cyclist comes as Aldi has been fuelling Team GB with fresh, healthy food since 2015, marking an impressive 10 years.

Aldi Store Manager John Armstrong said: “We can’t wait to open the doors to the new store in Kirkintilloch. It’s set to be a special day and having Olympic hero Katie Archibald join us will make it a morning to remember.

"Cycling star Katie Archibald added: “I’m so excited to be opening Aldi’s new store; it will be great to chat to customers and a lovely way for me to thank Aldi for its support of Team GB."

The opening of the Kirkintilloch store on November 20 comes as Aldi has just invested a staggering £1.6 billion into it opening a total of 80 new stores across the UK between 2026 and 2027.

Now the UK's fourth largest supermarket after overtaking Morrisons in 2022, the budget retailer has said its plans will see it commit to bringing "high-quality, affordable groceries to millions more British families."

The investment, which also includes store upgrades and distribution network development, will see Aldi aim to operate a long-term goal of 1,500 UK stores to meet the growing demand for affordable groceries.

Aldi also continues to be the cheapest supermarket across the UK, as the latest Which? comparison found that a basket of 71 groceries in September would cost just £122.77, beating out loyalty schemes from Tesco, Sainsbury's and Morrisons.

However, rival Lidl was once again hot on its heels with a total of £123.95, although this does mean that Aldi has taken the coveted title for 10 out of the 11 months in 2025, losing its crown to its rival in July only.
