Angus Gunn 'a long term Celtic target' as transfer intel on Kasper Schmeichel successor leaked

The Scotland international is out of the picture at struggling Premier League side Nottingham Forest

Goalkeeper Angus Gunn is a target for Celtic to replace Kasper Schmeichel next summer, according to former Scotland international Kevin Gallacher.

The 29-year-old left Norwich City as a free agent last summer for Nottingham Forest - but has yet to make a single appearance for the Premier League side.

Despite remaining Steve Clarke's first-choice goalkeeper for the national side, the Scotland No. 1 has struggled to even make the bench this season under Nuno and Ange Postecoglou.

And Gallacher claims that the Hoops are interested in the shot-stopper to replace 38-year-old Schmeichel - who is out of contract at the end of the campaign.

Scotland are guaranteed at least a World Cup playoff spot, and should Clarke lead his side to the tournament Gallacher has urged Gunn to leave Forest on loan in January - before a move to Glasgow's east end.

He told the Sunday Post: "I am not so sure we would be in such decent shape if Angus Gunn were to get crocked ahead of the 2026 finals, assuming we make it there in the first place, that is.

"Alongside Angus in the squad for the last games, against Greece and Belarus, were Craig Gordon and Liam Kelly. Neither is currently playing for their respective clubs, Hearts and Rangers.

"In fairness, the same is true of Gunn at Nottingham Forest but at least in his case we have recent evidence of his ability to perform off a cold start.

"In fact, Gunn's situation at Forest is so bad there is cause to be optimistic it will soon get sorted out in a way that is more beneficial for the country.

"Third choice at his club now, one down on what he signed up for, he has cause to look for a loan in January.

"With the World Cup coming up, and we now know that even if we do not clinch automatic qualification there will be a play-off in March to prepare for, he could be confident of getting his wish granted.

"Celtic have been credited with looking at him as a 2026-27 replacement for Kasper Schmeichel, whose deal is up next summer, so the long-term signs are promising, too.

"Also, with Ange Postecoglou being sacked by Forest yesterday - after just 39 days in charge - it is possible the next manager will come in and take a shine to him, it being standard practice for new bosses to give all the players in the squad a clean slate to start off on."

Speaking after the win over Greece earlier this month, Gunn conceded he was fortunate that Clarke had kept faith in him: "Obviously in my position it is a little bit different because I am not playing regularly at the club.

“I am just happy he had the faith in me to keep me in. It was definitely a proud moment.

"Since I have come into the squad over two years ago he has definitely put that into me. I felt that and it gives me belief to go out and repay him with performances.”
