Bob MacIntyre has Scottie Scheffler in his sights as Ryder Cup hero reveals plan to reach golf summit
The Oban ace lifted the Dunhill Links Championship at St Andrews on Sunday
Bob MacIntyre has world No 1 Scottie Scheffler in his sights after completing a remarkable eight days at golf’s highest level.
The Oban ace ended a 20-year wait for Scottish fans to cheer a home winner of the Dunhill Links Championship in majestic style with a four-shot victory at the Old Course on Sunday.
It was a clear indication of MacIntyre’s talent and mental toughness that he was able to lift himself to conquer a field featuring several world class players just days after being physically drained by the demands of an away Ryder Cup victory.
Now he wants to move to the next level and rub shoulders with the game’s very best player – even though he admits that Scheffler is currently in a class of his own.
The 29-year-old will move up to career-high of eighth when the latest world rankings are announced.
But he admitted in the wake of his latest success: “Scottie Scheffler is miles ahead of anyone else and he’s hard to catch right now.
“But at the right time, the biggest thing is running your own race and I'm doing all right just now in my race.
“If I can just keep moving forward, then I honestly don’t know how good I can be. But I know one thing, I’ll try my best.
“I know the level I'm at just now and I know the effort that goes into it.
“And I know the things that I have to change that could potentially help me but also hurt me. But as a team, me, everyone, we'll go away and work it out.”
For all that he clearly regards Scheffler as a cut above, MacIntyre has already shown over the past two years that he is also special.
Back-to-back Ryder Cup wins in Italy, where he was undefeated on his debut, and the States, his victories at the Canadian Open, Scottish Open and now the Dunhill, in addition to finishing runner-up to JJ Spaun at this year’s US Open, have hallmarked MacIntyre’s rapid progress.
