The Englishman said: “To be honest with you, I felt like I barely touched the ball during the game but I picked it out of the net four times. I haven’t made a save.
“When we got the goal back, I felt the only team who was going to score next was us. Then we just didn’t defend well enough.
“That’s what St Mirren do, they get on second balls and do it well. That’s what the third goal came from.
“The game was so open after that. We were trying to attack but they broke again and scored the fourth.”
The Steelmen were heavily tipped going into this one but ended up very much second best and it hurt.
Ward emotionally said: “It’s hard to put it into words at the moment, it’s so raw. It’s obviously not how we planned it to go.
“Full credit to St Mirren, they played really well and deserved the win. We just have to keep our heads up and go on to next week.
“We tried to play our football but there was a bit of a lack of pace at the start. We didn’t move the ball quick enough.
“So it was easy for them to defend. We didn’t really cause them many problems until the second half. We moved it a bit quicker and got some crosses in and then we got the goal back.
“We thought that would kick us on and we’d maybe go on to get another but they went down the other end and scored again, which killed us. We just weren’t fully at it today.”
Motherwell, under Jens Berthel Askou, have had a decent start to the season and are well aware that they can’t let this derail their season.
Ward claimed: “The manager tried to pick us up afterwards. We’ve got games coming thick and fast, it’s a big period coming up for us.
“We’ve just got to get our heads up and go again next week away to Aberdeen.
“We didn’t deserve to win today with that performance, 100 percent. St Mirren played it way better than us.”
