Cameron Menzies says what every Rangers fan thinks about Danny Rohl as he targets darts glory in Germany

Scottish star has had an excellent year and has more aims as he gets set to face Gary Anderson in round one of Euro Finals

Classy Cameron Menzies hopes the good times continue to Rohl as he sets a double target for Germany.

The Ayrshire ace faces Gary Anderson on Friday night in the opening round of the European Championships.

Rangers fan Menzies is looking forward to seeing how Danny Rohl gets on at Ibrox, but he’s got his own big aims in the manager’s homeland.

Last weekend in Hildesheim, he lost out to two-time World Champion Peter Wright in the last eight of the German Darts Championship. Now it’s another double Scots World Champion in Anderson.

Menzies is targeting success in the Dortmund event and also a place in next month’s Grand Slam having roared up the darts rankings and burst into the World’s Top 32 during a terrific year which he hopes to extend by adding that additional week in Wolverhampton to further boost a superb term.

It’s a gruelling schedule, but he said: “The last six weeks have been relentless. I’ve been home for a day, then I’ve been travelling. I came home, washed my clothes, put them straight back in the bag and went again. I’m in Dortmund this weekend, flying back and going straight to Wigan.

“The only thing I’ve not been in this year is the Premier League. I’m not in the Grand Slam yet, but you never know. If I get into that, then I’ve qualified for basically every event. I’ll just smash through this next week or so and then I’ll get some time off, although without a doubt, I’d like to get to the Grand Slam and will be trying.

“The European tours are amazing. It’s just the travelling that is tiring, but they’re absolutely brilliant. They’re just sitting in the pubs and stuff all dressed up as bananas at 3 o’clock in the afternoon and it doesn’t start until 7 o’clock. I’m sitting taking pictures for half an hour with bananas!

“As soon as it starts and during the breaks, it’s just tunes. I love it. Prague was brilliant. Budapest was good as well. I can just imagine why folk would love going to them.”

Ahead of facing another Scots idol, he said: “When I first got my Tour card, I was a bit in shock playing these matches. Now I sit with Gary and stuff and it’s different now. Same with Peter because he played with my dad years ago, so I’ve known him for a long time as well.

“It’s good playing against them now and I feel like, if I play my A game, I can give these guys a game. Before, I was just like: Do your best and see what happens. Now I’m like: If I can play the way I can, you never know because I’ve beaten them before. We all can play nowadays, Anybody can beat anybody.”

Menzies has been getting fitter as his form improves and he continued: “I need to start looking after myself. I’m getting older, I’m not young anymore. I know that the darts lifestyle isn’t the greatest because you travel a lot, but I’m trying to make it better. Usually I always get take-away, but now I’m going out for dinners and stuff.

“During the days when I’m stuck in a hotel, I’ll now go and walk around and see the city and stuff. Just doing little bits like that. I’ve not been to the gym in ages, but you never leave the gym feeling terrible. Even after a walk, you go back to the hotel room and feel good. I hate just sitting about, so it works.”

As Menzies heads to Dortmund, Rohl is in Norway taking charge of his first Rangers game against Brann. The darts ace said: “I suppose right now the fans are kind of on the fence with it, but they will get on board if he starts well.

“It was the same with Steven Gerrard when he came. Some were on the fence with it because he didn’t have a long managerial history, but he did well.

"I watched Arsenal the other night and Mikel Arteta didn’t have managerial history when he went into that job. He was an assistant to Pep Guardiola, so there you go. Sometimes you’ve got to take a risk.

“The manager we had recently, the fans just didn’t take to him. It never worked from the start. Rohl’s been spoke highly enough of and he’s got this opportunity. And from what I’ve heard he did alright at Sheffield Wednesday considering what was happening there.”
