Cameron Menzies shows darts hero ultimate respect after Euro Championship win he can put on his gravestone

Menzies dumped his fellow Scot and darts idol Gary Anderson out of the tournament in Dortmund

Cameron Menzies refused to celebrate as he dumped idol Gary Anderson out of the European Championship.

The Ayrshire ace cruised past the double world champ 6-3 in Dortmund.

But it was a match all about the poor finishing of Anderson who only hit three doubles out of eleven attempts compared to clinical Menzies.

He said: “It’s a bit surreal because obviously Gary is my hero. I’d be happy to be half the dart player he is. He’s the main man in Scotland.

“Sometimes you have to have a bit of luck and I had that tonight. Gary was up and down. He’s one of the best scorers I’ve seen in my life.

“It’s kind of weird. I’m buzzing to win but Gary wasn’t anywhere near his standard.

“It felt like a hollow win because I respect him. But I’ll take the win and it makes the travelling worthwhile. This is why we do it, for these wee moments.

“I can put it on my gravestone that I beat the Scottish legend at least once.

“My face might say I’m OK but I’m honestly so nervous. But I’m trying to sort myself out mentally and physically. I’m 36 now I’m not a young pup anymore.

“I’ve got people behind me who are helping me on the mental side and that’s one thing I struggle with. I’ve got a mental coach who is texting all the time.”

Menzies took the early initiative with both the opening legs. It was nip and tuck thereafter. The highlight of the match was an epic 164 kill on bull from Anderson to keep him in the contest at 3-2 down.

But he immediately blew his chance to level it up with three missed darts and Menzies seized his opportunity to extend the lead and never looked back to wrap it up with a Shanghai finish.
