Cameron Menzies suffers 'horrible' one two punch as Rangers defeat pain followed by unwanted darts record
Scottish darts star went from highs of Peter Wright win to misery of Ibrox result and an out-of-sorts show on the stage
Dismayed Cameron Menzies endured a horrible few hours as he set an unwanted record at the World Series of Darts.
The Ayrshire ace was in great spirits at lunchtime as he produced an excellent display to defeat countryman Peter Wright and set-up an evening clash with Chris Dobey in Amsterdam.
However, things began to take a turn for the worse in the afternoon before his meeting against the Geordie as revealed by ITV host Jacqui Oatley after his 6-1 defeat to Dobey.
The presenter said: "A horrible day for Cammy. Watching his beloved Rangers lose at home to Hearts earlier, he then averaged the lowest in tournament history.”
Oatley was referring to the statistic of 66.85 for the darts match that followed the Ibrox events which was the lowest registered in the decade of the the World Series Finals.
It was painful for the out-of-sorts Scot who, having looked so shap against Snakebite, couldn't rekindle the flame against Hollywood. Dobey, who ironically got to watch his own team Newcastle beat Wolves before the game, felt for his opponent and said: “It’s just hard playing Cammy full stop. You just never know what he’s going to do. He wasn’t himself. “Obviously, I was one the first on this afternoon, so it was a bit of a break, but it doesn’t bother me.
"I got to go back and watch Newcastle play, so I was happy. I think the gap didn’t do him as well as it did me. I think we’ve both got to adjust to it and I think I adjusted better. I think we’re both kind of similar players, we adapt to each other’s pace and he’s a good player to play against. It’s just you don’t know what you’re going to get with Cammy. Luckily for me, he didn’t turn up tonight.”
Dobey is determined to deliver another TV title having not triumphed on the box since the 2023 Masters and said: “Everybody wants to win. I think obviously the TV one I did win, it wasn’t ranked at the time. I know this isn’t ranked, but it could boost me in the right frame and get me up to where I should be. I’ve been wanting, needing this TV title ever since I won the first one.”
Dobey, though, knows the value of the ranking events as he added: “The rankings nowadays, it separates a lot of good players. You need to try and get as far ahead as possible because the World Championships, there’s a lot of big prize money now.
“You get the latter stages of the world and it’ll not take much catching up. So I can do well in the majors that are ranked, I think I’ll be in good stead. I’m not pulling out anything. I’m there for the remainder of the calendar and, hopefully, get that Grand Slam spot. I want to get back there. I want to do well and I love the competition. So that’s my aim.”
