Keep eggs fresh 'for weeks longer' by storing in this one place in kitchen

According to an expert this place provides the perfect conditions for storing your eggs.

There has been a long-standing debate about where to keep eggs. Some people believe storing them in the fridge is best, while others say having them in a cupboard, drawer, or even on the kitchen counter definitely helps them stay fresher for longer.

However, according to some foodies, there is one important thing you should do with your eggs, and it involves a common kitchen ingredient. When we buy eggs, we don't buy them directly from the fridge in supermarkets, and there's an important reason for that.

Eggs are stored on the shelves instead because if they are bought chilled, the transition from fridge to trolley causes a shift in temperature. Then, putting them back in your fridge again invites condensation and attracts bacteria.

Foodies at Modern Milkman said the optimal storage place for eggs once bought is in fact the fridge. Eggs can last for up to 3-4 weeks in the fridge before they begin to perish, reports the Mirror

The experts stated: "The storing of eggs in your fridge in their original packaging is the best way of keeping them extra fresh. This will keep them at a consistent temperature, staving off spoilage and slowing bacterial growth.

"A temperature of 4C or lower will ensure your eggs stay fresh and delicious. And keeping eggs in their original packaging will protect their pores from being infiltrated by their new, perhaps stronger-smelling neighbours in the fridge."

Keeping them in the packaging also helps remind you of their use-by date. It is said that the best place for them is on a shelf inside the fridge rather than in the fridge door.

"While many people prefer to have them in an easily and quickly accessible spot on the door, the temperature of this area fluctuates as you delve in and out of your fridge throughout the day," the experts noted.

However, if you have separated your yolk and egg white, you can still keep them fresh by leaving them in the fridge. Just beat the yolk and put it into an airtight container, and it can last for up to three days.

Egg whites should also be kept in your fridge in a sealable bag or an airtight container. You can freeze them for up to three months, provided they’ve not been frozen before—but in the fridge, they can last for up to two days.

The UK Gov says "Eggs are safe to eat for a couple of days after the best before date". The UK Food Standards Agency, on the other hand, advises against this, claiming "there is a greater chance of harmful bacteria growing in the eggs" after this date.
