The Lewis Ferguson Rangers 'fact' that dad Derek won't hide as Scotland star proves Ibrox doubters wrong

The youngster has went on to become one of the mainstay Serie A stars and is captain at current club Bologna

Lewis Ferguson always dreamed of playing for Rangers growing up.

His dad Derek and uncle Barry both turned out for the Light Blues and the youngster was determined to follow in their footsteps.

At just 14, that dream was shattered when he was told he wasn't good enough, before joining Hamilton Accies.

From there, he started to make waves and earned a move to Aberdeen and then Serie A with Bolgona and the rest is history.

The midfielder ticked off another career first when he smashed home his first goal for Scotland in the remarkable comeback win over Greece to keep the World Cup dream alive and kicking.

Dad Derek shared the story of his early career setbacks live on BBC Sportsound as a way to inspire the next generation.

Knockbacks and rejections happen, it is how you respond with the pundit waxing lyrical over three key strengths his son has.

He said: "His dream was to play with Rangers, I am not going to hide that.

"Obviously with myself and his uncle Barry he wanted to follow in our footsteps.

"At 14, he was told he wasn't going to be good enough to play for Rangers. I won't name a few of the guys that told him that.

"But the one thing, even at 14, he carries it on, he has a great mentality.

"There was a suggestion - a few other teams that were desperate to get him on board - but we were staying in Hamilton and it made sense with the academy that Hamilton Accies had at that moment in time.

"It made sense to let him go down there. I was just going to let him go and enjoy himself but that wasn't in his mindset.

"His was, he was going to go down there, work his socks off and prove Rangers wrong. So I think he has went a little bit down the way to doing that.

"That is maybe what you need to get across to some of the youngsters. You do get knocks and setbacks. It is how you react and come back from it.

"That is one thing Lewis has in abundance. You talk about character. That is one of his main strengths alongside his mentality and desire to win."
