Mixing 2 kitchen cupboard staples can remove oil stains from clothes like 'magic'

A cleaning whizz has shared a simple and easy method for removing stubborn oil stains from clothes quickly, and it only requires two household essentials but will leave clothes like "new"

A cleaning guru has unveiled a straightforward technique to eliminate stubborn oil stains from garments "in just minutes", requiring only two common household items. Finding a stain on a cherished piece of clothing can be distressing and irritating, prompting many to seek guidance on social media platforms.

Oil proves particularly challenging to remove from textiles and fabrics due to its water-repelling properties. This characteristic enables it to seep deeply into material fibres, causing the mark to become firmly embedded.

It will also undergo oxidation over time, resulting in stains that change hue, typically becoming darker and more prominent. The moment oil makes contact with clothing or fabric, it adheres to it and can lead to lasting damage if not addressed quickly.

Fortunately, one cleaning guru has unveiled a straightforward, two-ingredient remedy for eliminating any stubborn marks and maintaining clothes in as "good as new" condition.

Her method is remarkably simple to execute as well, with just two ingredients that you probably already have at home needed. The solution is reported to be highly effective and takes mere minutes to prepare.

Social media influencer Carolina McCauley has garnered millions of followers and admirers on TikTok through her frequent video posts, where she offers an array of household tips and tricks to assist people with cleaning, organisation, styling and beyond.

In one popular clip, Carolina demonstrated her method for making oil stains "vanish like magic". The footage shows her deliberately spilling oil onto a pristine white T-shirt before quickly dabbing it with kitchen paper.

The video then shows her combining her two-ingredient remedy, washing-up liquid and bicarbonate of soda, in a small bowl, mixing them into a paste.

Carolina added on-screen text explaining the process further, noting "this combo breaks down grease fast" and instructing viewers to apply the paste "evenly" over the mark, letting it dry fully before putting the item in the wash.

In the caption, Carolina detailed her complete technique, writing: "Oil stain? Don't panic. Here's my go-to trick that makes them vanish like magic. How I do it:

  • First, dab away any excess oil if it’s still wet
  • In a small bowl, mix baking soda with a little dish soap until it forms a paste
  • Spread the paste over the stain, making sure it’s fully covered
  • Let it dry completely, then toss the item in the wash as usual

"The result? Clothes look good as new".

Social media users flocked to the comments to share their reactions. One viewer commented: "Tried it a few days ago and works like a charm".

Another wrote: "You are a genius thank you". A third suggested: "Try baby powder to absorb the oil, and then use dish soap to remove any extra oil. Then give it a good wash".

However, a fourth complained: "Mine has been oil stained for too long". Someone else revealed their own approach for tackling oil on fabric, explaining: "My daughter was wearing parachute pants at work and a whole bottle of olive oil broke [and] splashed all over them.

"I did what I could with baking soda but then I soaked them [in] dishwashing liquid and water and then I scrubbed and it washed right out."
