Motorist jokes about way to avoid speeding tickets but people aren't impressed
A woman has shared a humorous 'hack' to avoid getting a speeding ticket, but some people have been left fuming over the 'dangerous' advice as the scolded the motorist over her joke
A driver has joked about a "hack" for dodging speeding fines, however, not many people were left impressed by her post. Speeding poses serious risks and carries significant penalties, including fines for those nabbed exceeding speed limits.
According to Gov UK: "The minimum penalty for speeding is a £100 fine and three penalty points added to your licence. You could be disqualified from driving if you build up 12 or more penalty points within a period of three years". Those caught breaking the limit can expect to receive a Notice of Intended Prosecution (NIP) within 14 days, alongside a Section 172 notice which must be returned within 28 days to confirm who was driving the offending vehicle.
Failing to respond could land you in court. After returning the Section 172 notice, you'll either get a Fixed Penalty Notice (FPN) or a court summons.
One driver shared a tongue-in-cheek method for sidestepping the entire procedure on TikTok. The brief video shows her peeling double-sided tape off the back of a large autumn leaf.
She then attaches the leaf to her number plate, concealing part of her vehicle's registration number.
In the UK, covering or obscuring your number plate is against the law, as it must remain legible to police officers and automated systems such as cameras. Obscuring a UK number plate could land you with a fine of up to £1,000 and result in a failed MOT.
Officers also have the power to issue penalty points, confiscate your car, or hand out a vehicle defect rectification notice demanding repairs within a fortnight.
Additional consequences might include higher insurance costs, and in the most severe instances, even a prison sentence.
She overlaid the clip with text stating: "It's that time of the year where you can say goodbye to speeding tickets."
In the comments section, numerous viewers took her post literally and believed she was being serious with her "hack".
They wasted no time in voicing their criticism, as one viewer wrote: "Or maybe just maybe let's not speed and risk the lives of other people on the road, how about that?!!"
A second agreed: "You know how to get rid of speeding tickets? By NOT SPEEDING."
A third commented: "Show this to the families that have lost loved ones due to speeding."
Another remarked: "Yes then you get pulled over for them to tell you it's blocking your reg. Then they find out it's on there purposely. Then you get an even bigger fine than the speed ticket. Smart."
Someone else put it simply: "There's a much easier way to avoid speeding tickets."
However, other TikTok viewers expressed frustration that so many people had missed the humour in the woman's "hack" clip.
One user wrote: "I fear this comment section is enemy territory."
Another added: "Holy the amount of people who haven't seen the joke in this."
Another person concurred: "I replied sarcastically and a bunch of people are hating on me for it [crying laughing emoji] like God forbid a girl wants to joke on the internet."
Meanwhile, someone else added: "I get the joke really! It's cool! But let's not normalise speeding."
The video's creator clarified afterwards: "This video is based on entertainment, not that actually people drive around like this (including myself)."
