The nasty Danny Rohl claim involving Hansi Flick debunked as six allies speak out for Rangers boss

The German worked at some top clubs before launching his own managerial career with Sheffield Wednesday

Incoming Rangers manager Danny Rohl was once the subject of a scathing attack from a Germany legend during his spell as No.2 to Hansi Flick's Der Mannschaft.

But the countless number of rave reviews the 36-year-old has received throughout his coaching career should give fans at Ibrox a real cause for optimism.

Rohl was interviewed for the job earlier this month but initially pulled out of the running to succeed Russell Martin last week because he was reportedly concerned about the length of time he would have had to prepare for the weekend clash with Dundee United.

Gers' wait for a home win in the Premiership rolls on in the wake of the 2-2 draw, with youth team coach Stevie Smith in the hotseat until the manager search reaches it's conclusion.

However, in a stunning turn of events, German gaffer Rohl has now touched down in Glasgow and is expected to be confirmed as the next Light Blues manager later today.

He is now in line to step out as boss for the first time when Rangers face Norwegian outfit Brann away from home in the Europa League on Thursday.

Rohl has been out of work since departing from troubled EFL Championship side Sheffield Wednesday on the eve of the new campaign, having previously guided the Owls to a top-half finish in his only full-season in charge.

Prior to his arrival at Hillsborough, Rohl had served as a number two to Flick in both the German national team and Bavarian giants Bayern Munich, also working with Niko Kovac in the latter.

Rohl also previously had a strong working relationship with Ralph Hassenhutl, following the Austrian to Southampton in the Premier League after acting as his understudy at RB Leipzig.

Here are seven insiders who have had plenty to say on Rohl over the years, having played under him, lined up against his teams or simply watched him with a keen aye from afar.

Chris Waddle

Speaking earlier this month, Sheffield Wednesday and England hero Chris Waddle said: "I like this style of his tactics he got with the players he had, I think it was very limited, he didn't really have a budget. You know, it was a lot of free transfers, there was a lot of players who played in League One with that team.

I thought he got them organised, he got them together. The players obviously rolled their sleeves up and gave it 110%, and he got his reward. You know, at one stage, we were talking about getting in the playoffs, which was amazing."

Barry Bannan

Owls captain Barry Bannan told Record Sport earlier this month: "Danny is the best manager I’ve worked with in my career. He’s so confident. When he came to Sheffield Wednesday, it was his first manager’s job. He’d been assistant to Hansi Flick at Bayern and Germany.

"When he arrived, I was thinking: ‘He’s the same age as me’. So I expected him to be quite shy. But in his first meeting, he was unbelievable. All the boys left the meeting saying he was unreal."

Mehmet Scholl

Bayern Munich icon Mehmet Scholl made some disparaging remarks about Rohl when he was Flick's number two in the German National Team at the 2022 FIFA World Cup. He said: "I believe that Flick was driven crazy during the World Cup by his student co-coach, who constantly distracted him with his iPad."

Yann Valery

Current Wednesday defender Yan Valery played under Rohl at Southampton and was later reunited with the German when he brought him to Hillsborough. Speaking last year, he said: "I am really happy to be working with him again because, at Southampton, he left at a moment when as players we didn’t really want him to leave. Even though he was the assistant he was the one who was taking (training) sessions and doing video work with us so he was really important as the assistant.

"He worked for big clubs and a big manager. Now, being back with him and him having all this knowledge, for me and for my progression it can only be good. He has to be different, he is the manager now. As an assistant, he would do all the work that the manager did not want to do for example.

"Now as a manager, he can’t do everything, so some things aren’t part of his role that he used to do with me as an assistant at Southampton. But as a person, he is still the same. I enjoy working with him, I am learning every week. Every game is different, every approach, and all the tactics are different."

Charlie Austin

Rohl has also been lauded as 'phenomenal' by Charlie Austin, who he also worked with at Southampton. The former Premier League striker was asked about the pending appointment at Ibrox on Sky Sports and replied: "He was a phenomenal coach, he really was. Rangers fans can say 'he's going to be Russell Martin 2.0' and all that but you don't go and work for clubs like he has done like RB Leipzig, Bayern Munich and the German national team.

"The job he did at Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship was phenomenal. The biggest bit (for him) is going to Rangers and realising how big the club is.

"But I'd be excited about him. Yes you haven't got someone with an affiliation to the club like Gerrard or Muscat but you've got someone coming in who is a young, hungry manager that will have you off your seat."

Paul Warne

Ex Derby County manager Paul Warne came up against Rohl's Wednesday in the Championship last season and was full of warm words for the 36-year-old, commenting: "I’ve been really impressed, as everybody has and as their fans have.

"I’ve watched Sheffield Wednesday play live four times this year. They sing the manager’s name win, lose or draw and they’re a knowledgeable fan base.

"They’re really impressed with him. So, that’s probably the best way I can talk about how well he’s done."

Charlie McNeil

And finally, Sheffield Wednesday forward Charlie McNeil revealed that the chance to work with Rohl was central to his decision to join Wednesday on a free transfer in July 2024 from Manchester United.

He said: In April last season, I came here under Danny [Rohl] and really liked it. Again his style of play and everything and you know that’s what that’s what really made me want to join the club.

"His style of play and everything about how he is as a manager, how he wants to help young players and build a good team [made me want to join] so yeah, everything appealed to me which was why I really wanted to join the club."
