Rapid Rutherglen Glencairn net after 14 seconds to help send Rossvale out of Scottish Communities Cup
Glens gaffer Joe Pryce watched his side made a quick-fire start to their second round tie
Joe Pryce watched his Rutherglen Glencairn side score possibly the fastest goal in the club’s history, but was disappointed they didn’t rack up a bigger Scottish Communities Cup result in their 3-1 win over Rossvale.
Ryan Carlin found the back of the net inside 14 seconds at the Huntershill on Saturday, with club officials unable to remember a faster goal or find a record of one.
And that put Glens on the road to victory in the second round tie before Joe Burns grabbed the second in 36 minutes and Harrison Edwards netted the third in 74 minutes.
But Pryce felt his side made life more difficult than it had to be after their rapid start.
The co-boss said: “Fourteen seconds for the first goal is incredible. It was just the first passage of play.
“Danny Smith puts in a great ball in behind for big Ryan Carlin getting on the end of it with an excellent finish. We couldn’t have got off to a better start.
“You are always happy to be in the next round of the cup because that is always the tricky part.
“But, similar to last week, we should have made it more comfortable for ourselves.
“We created loads and loads of opportunities but we weren’t clinical enough for my liking.
“We kept creating chances and should have added to the scoreline before Joe scored the second.
“When we got in at half-time 2-0 up, the message was to make sure we keep the back door closed because Rossvale hadn’t really threatened us.
“But then a minute into the second half, a hopeful cross comes in and a mistake from our defender gives them the goal and then all of a sudden it is game on again.
“All of a sudden Rossvale had a bit of life about them again.
“We controlled the majority of the match, but Rossvale kept going and it was just about getting that third goal to put it to bed, which we did. But we should have added another couple of goals after that.
“The Scottish Cup is the biggest competition we are in so it is great to be in the next round.”
Glens return to league action on Saturday when they welcome Largs Thistle to the Hamish B Allan Stadium. Kick-off is 2pm.
Fisher a great catch for us, says Glens gaffer
Rutherglen Glencairn co-boss Joe Pryce reckons new signing Leo Fisher will be a great asset to the club after penning a short term deal that they hope they will be able to extend in 2026.
The former Rangers youth defender has joined on loan from Championship side Queen’s Park until January and made his debut in Saturday’s 3-1 win over Rossvale in the Scottish Communities Cup.
And Pryce is delighted to add him to his squad as they return to West of Scotland Premier Division duty this weekend away to Largs Thistle.
He said: “We are really grateful to Queen’s Park for loaning him out to us.
“Leo came straight in on Saturday because he has already trained with us a couple of times.
“He did very well and there’s no doubt he will be an asset to us.
“It will be a great experience for Leo as well and he played well against Rossvale.
“The deal is until January for now. That is the way Queen’s Park wanted it.
“But we can take another look at it then and if it suits all parties, hopefully we can get Leo for an extended length of time after that.”
Glens are sitting 14th in the top flight and face a Largs side 10 place above them in the table, so Pryce has called on his side to make sure they are more clinical than they were last weekend, in a game they dominated against Rossvale.
Pryce added: “We managed to get past Rossvale but we’ve created numerous chances in the last couple of weeks and the disappointing thing is we should have scored many more goals than we did.
“So that is something we’ve really got to work on.
“We are back in the Premier Division this weekend and we are certainly not going to create that amount of chances when we play Largs.
“Any chances we get we are going to have to take them because we are up against a really good side, a season Premier Division team, who have an excellent manager and excellent players. So we really need to take our opportunities when they come our way.
“The real positives from the Rossvale game is Leo playing his first game. Josh Gemmell came back from injury, as did Michael Foley, and Harrison Edwards getting his goal off the bench was a real positive as well. Largs will be very tough.”
