Russell Martin sacked by Rangers after just seven league games as he pays price for horror start

The 39-year-old was only appointed in June and his reign was the shortest of any permanent Light Blues boss

Russell Martin has been sacked by Rangers just four months into a three-year contract at Ibrox.

The axe fell on the flop boss after just seven Scottish Premiership games in charge with just a single league win to his name.

Martin had 17 games in total with just five victories but paid the price for a horror start to the season which included a 9-1 Champions League play-off hammering by Club Brugge.

The former Southampton boss was the first appointment of the 49ers era and the American owners are now under pressure to get it right after admitting a big mistake.

Martin's reign is the shortest of any of the 20 permanent managers in the history of Rangers, eclipsing Paul Le Guen who was axed after 186 days.

The final straw came on Sunday with the draw against Falkirk - when fans turned on the manager yet again with protests outside the stadium stopping the team bus and forcing the boss to leave through the side door.

Rangers released a statement saying the 39-year-old had gone. It read: "Rangers Football Club confirms that it has parted company with Head Coach, Russell Martin.

"While all transition periods require some time, results have not met the club's expectations.

"Assistant Head Coach, Matt Gill, and First-Team Coach, Mike Williamson, will also be departing.

"Russell and his staff have worked exceptionally hard throughout their time at the club. We thank them for their efforts and wish them well for the future.

"Further updates from the club will follow in due course."
