Vaclav Cerny told he's next Arjen Robben after Rangers transfer miss while ex Ibrox kid out in the cold

The Czech Republic star has got off to a flyer with the Istanbul giants after making the move earlier this month

Rangers were priced out of a permanent transfer for Vaclav Cerny in the summer window - with the former loan star now at Besiktas after sealing his Wolfsburg exit.

Cerny caught the eye in a bitterly disappointing season for Gers last year, scoring 18 goals in all competitions, including six in their run to the quarter finals of the Europa League.

His form continued after Phillippe Clement's sacking last February, with the Belgian's replacement Barry Ferguson recently revealing he would have loved to have kept Cerny beyond the end of his loan spell had he got the job on a full-time basis.

After making the switch to Turkey earlier this month, the Czech Republic international set up a goal on his debut in a 2-1 win over local rivals Istanbul Basaksehir last weekend, having netted the opener in his country's World Cup 2026 qualifier against Montenegro days earlier.

And the 27-year-old has already caught the eye of former Slavia Prague player and current Fatih Karagümrük boss Marcel Licka, who has compared the winger to none other than former Chelsea, Bayern Munich and Netherlands hero Arjen Robben.

Champions League winner Robben was renowned for his ability to come off the right flank and curl shots into the top corner and Licka sees direct similarities between Cerny's playstyle and his.

Speaking about the player's arrival at Besiktas, he said: "He's a very fast player. He also has strong technical skills. Like Robben, he can cut inside and unleash powerful shots at the far post.

"Beşiktaş has signed a very good winger. Both Cerny and the Beşiktaş fans will be very pleased."

Meanwhile one ex Ibrox prodigy has failed to land a contract with Swedish second division side Varbergs Bois.

Wide man Dapo Mebude joined Rangers youth academy back in 2011, signing his first professional contract six years later.

However, the Scotland youth international would go onto make just one senior appearance for the club when he appeared as a substitute in a win over Kilmarnock at the end of the 2018/19 season under Steven Gerrard.

Medbude left Gers to join Watford in 2021 only to be on the move again 12 months later, heading to Belgium with KV Oostende.

He failed to make an impact on the continent and suffered a near fatal experience when he was involved in car crash that left him unconscious for five days.

The 24-year-old teamed up with Dunfermline last season and made 14 league appearances but was released at the end of his contract having spent part of the campaign on loan at Septemvri Sofia in Bulgaria.

And Varbergs sporting director Erik Lund Fahlen has confirmed the club will not be offering Mebude a contract after he spent time on trial with the Scandanavian outflt.
